Abstract

One of the major challenges confronting us today is the issue of global climate change and the level of knowledge about its effects in developing nations. This paper examines the problem of global climate change and the prospect of mitigating its negative effects through informal and non-formal learning in a typical developing nation like Nigeria drawing from a huge city like Port Harcourt. It adopts a case study approach in arriving at useful data in the analysis of the linkage between education and climate change management in the country. The kernel of the paper is the emphasis on incorporating informal and non-formal education in the management of climate change in Nigeria. Hence it argues for the introduction of climate change education in informal and non-formal education programmes rather than leave it at the formal educational level alone. It is recommended that climate change management should be included as a compulsory course in all informal and non-formal educational curricular at all levels. With this, it can be sure that more persons will have the intellectual know-how to manage climate change. The paper concludes that curriculum review, sensitization, advocacy and mobilization of support for climate change and education are the necessary ingredients to instill the drive for climate change management in Nigeria.
