Abstract

Scrap tires are a hard to manage waste. Although this topic is theoritically well understood, it demands a systematic approach to ensure productivity and sustainability. This is the main challenge in developing countries where the legal and physical infrastructures are not adopted to tackle this emerging problem. In Iran, scrap tire recycling is beginning to show some progress but still suffers from insufficient resources, lack of technology and cultural barriers. This paper investigates the scrap tire recycle system including collection, transportation and reuse, and their corresponding problems. It is argued that the main problems arise with the collection and transportation stages as well as inadequate laws and legislations to support the recycling processes. Also, current management system seems to be inconsistent with the environmental, cultural and economical needs of the country due to lack of authorities for different stages of scrap tire recycle. Therefore, an integrated management system is proposed to overcome these shortcomings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
