Abstract
- The article discusses the ecological impacts of rattlesnake roundups. Hunters search rattlesnakes in the home burrows of the gopher tortoise. It is noted that the burrows may be destroyed during the snake hunting process. About 15% of the 125,000 rattlesnakes captured annually are deliberately killed at roundups, according to the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (ASIH). The author notes that roundups threaten the biodiversity of a whole ecosystem. Also discussed is the declining populations of rattlesnake species.
