Abstract

The article discusses the programs and activities of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Library Statistics Program of the U.S. Department of Education headquartered in Washington, D.C. as of May 2011. It explores the library surveys conducted by NCES, namely, the Academic Libraries Survey (ALS) and School Library Media Centers Survey (SLMCS). NCES publishes reports in the First Look format which includes a short collection of tables that list state and national totals. The NCES Web site at http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch provides free downloads of NCES publications and edited raw data files from the surveys. The NCES Electronic Catalog on the site offers out-of-print publications and data files.
