Abstract

The article discusses tokens left behind by visitors to the site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United Airlines Flight 93, a hijacked airplane, crashed during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the U.S. It examines the organization of collecting and preserving tokens paying tribute to the passengers on the plane. According to the article, most of the objects are religious and patriotic in nature. The article focuses on how the American flag is incorporated in the tributes.
