Abstract

The article offers information on the study concerning the breeding habitats and tadpole morphology of relict frog Tsingymantis antitra in the Ankarana area in Madagascar. The tadpoles were identified using a DNA barcoding approach based on a fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene and were stained with methylene blue to determine developmental stages and assess characters of the oral disc. It mentions that Tsingymantis has a strongly enlarged and keratinised jaw sheaths with strong serrations in the lower and upper jaw, which are typical for oophagous tadpoles. Moreover, it adds that the combination of larval habitats and oral morphology could be an indication for oophagy or a predatory feeding modes in Tsingymantis tadpoles.
