The article discusses the place, history, and function of systems of numeration within a variety of different African cultures as a whole, and within the continent's philosophical scene in particular, with attention given to the relations between linguistics and semantics on the one hand, and mythology and popular culture on the other. Additional themes include the history of African literature and philosophy, the place of numbers and symbols in popular culture, and language.
