Abstract

The article focuses on the third sex. In the nineteenth century, the term third sex covered a broader semantic field than its present-day usage. Magnus Hirschfeld, who used the term for the first time in 1899, made the concept third sex popular in the twentieth century. The understanding of the third sex as homosexuals was announced in a novel by Honore de Balzac.
