Abstract

The article discusses the Ifriqiyan shore, now Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya; during the rule of the Berber Hafsid dynasty, which ruled from 1232 to 1492, with a focus on the text of the Rihla al-Tijani, written by Abd Allah al-Tijani. Topics include the sacred elements and themes in the work, and the author's manipulation of these elements; the ideological concepts of order and violence; and the discourse of war which developed in this maritime society, as well as the naval weakness of the otherwise powerful Hafsid Kingdom.
