Abstract

The article focuses on the efforts exerted to address foot and mouth disease (FMD) in India. There are six serotypes of FMD virus, with serotypes O, A and Asia-1 being the most common in the country. The FMD Control Programme, which entails regular six monthly vaccination, has been established to create disease free zones in the country. The program has been credited with reducing FMD rates in India. FMD is prevalent in Asia and Africa and has caused considerable loss to the livestock industry.
