Abstract

The article focuses on Bangalore, India, a cantonement built by the British to keep an eye on the city of Mysore, India. Bangalore was European in its orientation, with wide roads, bungalows and churches, where everyone spoke English. The administrative map of India was re-drawn in 1956 on a linguistic basis with Bangalore finding itself the capital of a new Kannada state.
