The article focuses on the history of the American Indian population's fight for sovereignty. Topics include the legal development of the federal acknowledgment process of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), U.S. Supreme Court recognition of American Indians in legal proceedings, and land title claims between Indian tribes and U.S. citizens.
