Abstract

The article discusses the impact of Mercosur, the South American free trade zone comprised of countries such as Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, on the South American economy. Particular attention is given to a September 2011 announcement from Brazil that it will increase taxes on imported automobiles that are not primarily manufactured within Mercosur. According to the author, this may be harmful to the economy and automobile industry of Uruguay and has raised tension between the two countries.
