Abstract
- The article reports on the increase in the number of suffocation deaths in infants in the U.S. between 2000 and 2009. It identifies the core elements of a safe sleeping environment for newborns which include supine positioning, a firm sleep surface with a fitted crib sheet, and absence of loose bedding. The need to educate new parents on safe sleeping environments for infants is emphasized.
