Abstract

The article discusses the difficult process of defining the term indigenous within the nation of Peru, focusing on the social, cultural and political implications the definition may have on the country and its citizens. The author explores the difference between an indigenous person and an indigenous community, the relevant laws and legislation pertaining to who and what is categorized as indigenous, and the lack of indigenous self-recognition in many groups of Peruvian peoples. The issue, which the author claims is problematic for Peru as a nation, is analyzed within the context of cultural and legal structures.
