The article discusses media and methods of making social distinctions in the funeral and memorial music composed in Europe in the 17th century. Topics include death memorial composed for the aristocratic class, Lutheran versus non-Lutheran customs, and musical memories from England. A case study of middle-German Protestantism from the city of Leipzig, Germany is presented.
