Abstract
- The article focuses on the evolving discipline of contemporary history and examines how historians adapt to this evolution in Europe. The author compares historical conditions during the 1970s and in the 2000s which were conducive to the emergence of a shared engagement toward a European historiographical movement, referred to as contemporary history in the article. Topics include the rehabilitation of the political history movement during the 1980s, the history of the Cold War period and opposing communist and anti-communist historiographies, and French historians fighting to gain access to public archives.
