Abstract

In this paper, we describe the modification of sugarcane bagasse with succinic anhydride to introduce carboxylic functions to sugarcane bagasse. The properties of the sugarcane bagasse hemicelluloses change after carboxyl modification. The influences of the chemical reaction on the conditions, the chemical composition, and the thermal stability of the modified product are described. One gram of dried sugarcane bagasse was modified using 3.0 g succinic anhydride and 0.1 g N-bromination succinic imide with a reaction time of 6 h at 70°C. The obtained materials were characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
