CACIQUES CON SOTANA. CONTROL SOCIAL E INJERENCIA ELECTORAL DE LOS ECLESIÁSTICOS EN LAS FILIPINAS ESPAÑOLAS.

This article discusses the involvement of the clergy in political elections in the Spanish Philippines during the 19th century. The author describes the election process for the native Filipino elites during this time period and comments on the the influence of the ecclesiastical institutions on their outcomes. He gives particular attention to their method of exploitation of the political process through manipulation of religious beliefs, repression, and abuse of power. The relationship between Spanish imperialism and ecclesiastical interference is also explored.
