Abstract

Highlights: [•] We spatially project water usage under two strategies of (sub)urban growth. [•] We examine the relationship between water use and land cover using household-scale data. [•] We find that lawn area is a significant predictor of annual water use. [•] We project that under the Smart Growth scenario a 5% reduction in additional water use can be achieved. [•] We find that urban design may be an alternative solution for towns seeking to reduce water use. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
