Abstract

The article reports on the challenge faced by Northland, New Zealand dairy farmer Richard Dampney in complying with the requirement of keeping stock out of waterways. According to Dampney, the nature of his land makes fencing impractical in economic terms. The exclusion of livestock from waterways is a requirement imposed by dairy cooperative Fonterra and Dampney states this threatens the future of their dairy farm business. He adds that it will be detrimental for him to fence off steep banks.
