Abstract

This article discusses broken bones, strains and sprains. A broken bone is often called a fracture. A broken bone is called a compound fracture if the bone pierces the skin. Injuries to joints in the legs are the most common sports injuries. A dislocation occurs when a bone slips out of its joint. Ligaments and tendons can be torn or overstretched. When ligaments that hold a joint together are overstretched the injury is called a sprain. Backaches are among the most common skeletal system complaints. Back muscle or ligament strain can cause a pain in the lower back called lumbago.
