Abstract

The article presents a comparative analysis of thirteen proverbs featured in chapters 5 and 50 of the Spanish novel "Don Quichotte" by Miguel de Cervantès Saavedra and their French retranslated versions. Consideration is given to whether translations age well, how the translator approaches a previously translated work, and how to adapt the proverbs in Cervantes's work to the time period in which the work is translated. The versions by French translators including Louis Viardot in 1836, Jean Canavaggio in 2001, and Jean-Raymond Fanlo in 2008 are compared.
