Abstract

The article discusses a research study which investigated the impact of mercury exposure on the breeding population of Common Loon, Gavia immer, in the Adirondack Park in New York from 1998-2007. Topics discussed are the correlation of lake acidity with mercury concentrations in Common Loons, the risk for behavioral and reproductive impacts in male and female Common Loons based on mercury body burden, and the link between high mercury levels and reduced number of chicks fledged annually.
