Abstract
- Contrary to the existential positions of much modern European writing, Goethe and Kant in their very different styles declare themselves contentedly at home in the universe. Their secular 'Diesseitigkeit' is traced through Goethe's poetry and through key passages of Kant's thought. Contrasts and comparisons are set up with Donne, Pascal, and Montaigne.
