Abstract

This article discusses the history of supporting the clergymen in the 16th century Catholic Church in New Spain. The author comments on the decrees of the Third Mexican Provincial Council and ecclesiastical policies set in place by Phillip II, King of Spain in regards to the civil rights, salaries, and property rights of priests and secular clergymen. Other topics include the role of the bishops in financial regulation of the church, the search of parish income to support priests, and tithes. The history of indigenous peoples of New Spain are discussed.
