Abstract

Femoxetine and amitriptyline were compared double-blind in totally 38 patients with endogenous depression. Of these 25 patients completed the six weeks' treatment with 13 in the femoxetine group and 12 in the amitriptyline group. A significant improvement was seen for both drugs and it appears that femoxetine was equally as active as amitriptyline. No correlation was found between the plasma-concentration of femoxetine and the clinical effect.Side effects especially those of an anticholinergic nature appeared with a higher frequency in the amitriptyline group.
