Abstract

1.The increase in the microhardness of commercial iron containing 0.035% of C as a result of rapid remelting of the surface layer by laser irradiation is governed by the ??a transformation in accordance with the martensitic shear mechanism.2.The martensite forming as a result of laser treatment exhibits a stacked morphology with a transverse stack dimension of 0.4–0.6 µm.
