Abstract

ABSTRACTNinety one streptomycetes strains were isolated from permafrost soil in Spitsbergen, Arctic Ocean. Five of them showed antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts and fungi. The strains were psychrotolerant with growth at temperatures between 4°C and 28°C. Morphological, physiological and biochemical characterizations were investigated and the starins could be affiliated to the same genus. Antibiotic production of the strains was investigated at 4°C and the active compouds were isolated from the culture filtrate. Strong activity of the isolated compounds against bacteria, yeast and fungi was detected.
