Abstract

•We study DNA damage response to low-LET photons and high-LET alpha particles.•Cycling primary thyrocytes are more sensitive to radiation than stationary cells.•Influence of radiation quality varies due to cell cycle status of normal cells.•High-LET radiation gives rise to a sustained DNA damage response.
