Factors affecting farmers’ acceptance and perception of a potential incentive scheme in grassland areas

•Farmers who have independently contracted grassland and non-agricultural investment are more willing to accept high grazing fees.•Farmers who have a large proportion of breeding and farmers who think the ecology protection are more important tend to accept low grazing fees.•Climate change and government executive capacity are the main considerations of farmers who disagree with grazing fees and payment by results scheme.
