Abstract
- •Two main mechanistic models are proposed for cytoplasmic incompatibility.•Both can explain simple cases of incompatibility as seen in Drosophila.•Mosquitoes Culex pipiensshow complex and non-transitive cytoplasmic incompatibilities.•Only the toxin–antidote model simply explains such complexity, through lock–key interactions.
