Abstract

Airborne halogen compounds have been found to greatly increase the intensity of the N2and NO molecular spectra of air in an ac spark. Chlorinated materials cause the largest enhancement followed by brominated, iodinated, and fluorinated compounds. This phenomenon can effectively be used to measure the presence of many volatilized halogen compounds present in concentrations as low as 1 ppm.
