Abstract

It is concludes on the basis of animal studies that formamide is highly embryolethal and teratogenic. N,N-dimethylformamide is probably embryolethal but not teratogenic. Although at least in one study (Keller and Lewis, 1981) it was concluded that the current MAC of 10 ppm gives adequate protection, effects on reproductive parameters have also been observed at dose levels that are loss less than 10% of the current MAC-value (30 mg/m3 = 10 ppm). It is further emphasized that human data with respect to the risks of formamide and N,N-dimethylformamide are inadequate to confirm the findings in animals. It is concluded that additional studies in animals are necessary.
