Communications Utilisateurs: Recherche & Education - http://sig2012.esrifrance.fr; International audience; This is a study of the difficulties of novice geoscientists in making suitability maps for land use issues. Students discover the concepts of multicriteria spatial analysis and the features offered by the Geographical Information System ArcGIS 10.. Several obstacles emerged throughout the resolution of the problem: in data mining, visual exploration, decision-making steps. Adopting didactical engineering as research methodology, we propose a categorization of these difficulties based on visual operator's taxonomies and we rely on theoretical frameworks and tools of sciences education to offer learning scaffolding and technical improvements.
