Abstract

In this work the accuracy of Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral method for the calculation of the refractive index of volume dielectric objects will be studied. To do this the results obtained by using this technique will be compared to those obtained by rigorously solving Helmholtz equation for a dielectric cylinder of circular cross section. Finally the Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral method will be applied to obtain the refractive index of a hair by fitting the experimental results of the diffraction pattern of the hair measured on a CCD camera to the theoretical curve.
