Abstract: Reaction between 2-nitroethanol and sodium hypobromite gives bromopicrin (CBr3NO2) in high yield. A kinetic study indicates that 2,2-dibromo-2-nitroethanol is an intermediate and that the rate-determining step is proton removal from 2-nitroethanol.
