Abstract: This chapter provides an introduction to the composition, structure and transport mechanisms of biological cellular and epithelial membranes. The type of lipids found in cell membranes, their chemical properties and their arrangement into a lipid bilayer are discussed as are the classes of membrane associated proteins and their characteristics. The third major component of biological membranes, carbohydrate, is also discussed as is its apparent functional role.
