Abstract

lthough uncontrolled diabetes can increase the risk for other comorbidities, some Adiagnoses are more common than others. Diabetes is associated with a variety of small and large vessel complications, such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, and atherosclerosis. Some of this is explained by hypercoagulability, but the connection between diabetes and coagulation disorders still requires research. In this case study, a patient with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) presented to the hospital initially with a critical diagnosis, requiring intensive care treatment. When this initial diagnosis was controlled, another life-threatening condition occurred, which was not initially linked to diabetes because it is not as common as other comorbidities. A quick response by the hospitalist nurse practitioners (NPs) and appropriate testing were the keys to arriving at the correct diagnosis and treatment, which prevented worsening morbidity and controlled the high potential for mortality from this critical event.
