Abstract
- We have identified the characteristic difficulties in literacy experienced by many dyslexic pupils of secondary school age (11-18 years), once they have mastered the basic skills. Some of the most effective teaching methods, as demonstrated in the research literature, are described. We have attempted to explain some of the ways in which we have used them with our students. It is particularly important to remember, when working with this age group, that there is never only one right answer. The special education teacher must be prepared to work in partnership with his or her students, and to be willing to listen to and learn from them. We have both found this to be a rich source of professional development.
