Abstract

A recognition technology for crude oil and lubricant is described by use of back-scattering fluorescence. It is shown that when the fluorescence intensity reaches the maximum peak, its attenuation ratio has no obvious dependence on laser power, incident angle and thickness of oil film during a fixed wavelength interval. To enhance the feature of oil type, two relatively constant wavelength regions are selected and their fluorescence intensity attenuation ratios are fused in a two-dimensional spectrum. Then two areas which represent the two kinds of oil are identified in the two-dimensional spectrum, and the oil type can be determined according to which area the measured ratio data lie in. The experimental results show that the correct identification probabilities for crude oil and lubricant can reach 96% and 98% respectively. It is expected that this can be a useful method for oil type recognition.
