Abstract
- In the present research, we propose and test an explanation that can both account for the previously found empirical pathway from victimization to subsequent offending and extend Risky Lifestyles / Routine Activities and Self-Control explanations. Specifically, drawing from Life History Theory-Psychology, we argue that victimization is a crucial life event that may lead to decreased expectations for the future and trigger a short-term mindset, which, in turn, can result in offending. We test this using longitudinal data from a representative sample of Swiss adolescents.
