Leishmaniasis: Status in Tunisia (1986)

Visceral (VL) and cutaneous (CL) leishmaniasis both occur in Tunisia. the first CL cases have been reported in Gafsa by Deperet and Boinet 1, 2 in 1884 and the first infantile CL case was detected by Laveran 3 in 1903, in a suburb of Tunis. Since then, records on leishmaniasis were regularly reported by several workers 4–14. the recent occurrence of severe outbreaks of zoonotic Cl in the centre of the country 15 has modified the epidemiological picture and has made it necessary to give an up-to-date outline of the leishmaniasis situation in Tunisia.
