Neutron inelastic scattering from hexamethylenetetramine-d12 and adamantane-d16

Abstract

Neutron inelastic scattering measurements are reported for hexamethylenetetramine-d12 and for adamantane-d16 in the energy range 200–800 cm−1. The observed intensities are strongest for those modes of vibration with the largest deuterium displacements. These displacements were computed from a normal-coordinate analysis based on both neutron and optical data. In spite of the much smaller incoherent scattering cross section of deuterium as compared with hydrogen, the results show that the NIS technique can be used successfully on deuterated samples.
