Abstract

The cyanelle of Cyanophora paradoxa is an endosymbiont derived from a cyanobacterial progenitor. The photosynthetic properties of the cyanelle resemble those of cyanobacteria, but the genome size of the cyanelle is about 10% of those reported for cyanobacteria. Because of its photosynthetic properties, genetic simplicity and function, the cyanelle can be considered to be almost a cyanobacterial chloroplast.
