Abstract

Main Ideas: 1. There is a difference between adjectival vs. adverbial epistemic modal expressions with respect to the probability thresholds associated with them, with the acceptability of adjectival expressions more closely tracking mathematical/circumstantial probabilities, whereas the acceptability of adverbial expressions is more dependent on a subjective sense of probability 2. The extent of the difference in acceptability between adjectival and adverbial expressions will depend on whether the probabilities in question can be mathematically measured/calculated (objective probability) or not, with greater differences expected in the case of non-measurable situations We investigate these two hypotheses by placing two epistemic adjectives (possible and certain), and their adverbial counterparts (possibly and certainly) in an environment where the probability of the proposition being true can be mathematically calculated, on the one hand, and in an environment where it cannot be so calculated, on the other.
