Abstract

Clinical Infectious Diseases 1995;21:704 ? 1995 by The University of Chicago. All rights reserved. 1058-4838/95/2103 -0050$02.00 feri. Furthermore, all isolates were also positive for the OspA gene by PCR. DNA sequences for the 16S rRNA gene for 16 axenic cultures matched those of B. burgdorferi sequences stored in GenBank (Bethesda, MD). These results were validated by Dr. John F. Anderson (The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, New Haven, Connecticut) and Dr. Steve Sviat (Zoonosis Branch, Division of Vector-Bore Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], Ft. Collins, Colorado). The B. burgdorferi isolates from British Columbia have been deposited in the culture collection at the CDC in Ft. Collins. The PAGEprotein profile and DNA sequence for the 16S rRNA gene of one isolate, which was possibly a mutant or a new species, differed markedly from those of B. burgdorferi. Lyme borreliosis has been made a reportable disease in British Columbia.
