Abstract
- Progressive metastasizing carcinoma of the breast was treated in 49 menopausal women by a combination of ethinyl estradiol (3 mg daily) and cyclophosphamide (200 mg daily). Objective remission was achieved in 21 cases. Visceral and cutaneous metastases responded better than osseous ones. Among visceral foci lung and cerebral metastases responded better than liver metastases. The average duration of remission was 15.4 months. In 6 instances of recurrence a 2nd course of cyclophosphamide led to a further remission with remission averaging 8 months. Average total cyclophosphamide dose until 1st remission was 7.8 gm with a 2nd 6.6 gm. Mean duration of treatment with ethinyl estradiol corresponded to the duration of remission averaging 15.4 months in 6 cases of recurrence maximally 23.4 months.(Authors modified)
