Abstract

While historians and numismatists agree in dating the first appearance of a comitatensian mint—a mint that follows the emperor and the comitatus in their movements—to Valentinian’s reform of 367, this article asks if it would be possible to admit a certain continuity with the previously attested Republican mobile mints. In order to do so, the history of the mints of Trier, Milan, and Sirmium is examined along with the imperial presence in these locations, and set in the context of what is otherwise known about the monopoly of gold minting in the Later Roman Empire.
