Abstract: The relationship between the xanthophyll pool [diadinoxanthin plus diatoxanthin normalized to chlorophyll (Chl) a] and irradiance was examined during phytoplankton blooms in Sagami Bay from the end of April to July 2000. In the case of Chl a concentrations >2 mg m -3 , a linear correlation was found between the xanthophyll pool and irradiance of the previous day. On the other hand, for Chl a concentrations
